The Île de Ré is known for its magnificent landscapes. To fully appreciate the beauty of its wild and unspoiled nature, there is nothing better than discovering it on foot! A small selection of the most beautiful hikes to do during your stay on Ré.

This is the best way to explore the Île de Ré: on foot – or by bike –, ideal for experiencing the sweetness of life on Ré.

There is no shortage of island trails, whether along the coast, through the woods, salt marshes or villages. A little paradise for hiking and outdoor enthusiasts!

Birdwatching walk between Saint-Clément-des-Baleines and Portes-en-Ré

In the heart of the nature reserve

With this 19 km loop (allow about 5 hours), you will cross the salt marshes and the nature reserve of the Île de Ré.

From November to May, you can observe the many migratory birds that come to take refuge there.

Before entering the Trousse-Chemise woods – the one that inspired Aznavour’s eponymous song.

Last stop: the beach, with a breathtaking view of the iconic Baleines lighthouse as a reward, less than 25 minutes from Élégance Suites Hôtel****, located in Bois Plage en Ré.

Cultural walk on the fortifications trail

Meeting Vauban

Departure from Rivedoux-Plage, the gateway to the Île de Ré, for a 13-kilometre (2-hour) hike to discover the Vauban fortifications, which blend into nature.

Before reaching Saint-Martin de Ré, you will cross La Flotte – take the opportunity to take a break at its lively port and stroll through its typical island alleyways.

Hike between Ars-en-Ré and Le Fiers d’Ars

A walk between land and sea

This is the shortest of the hikes – 10 km, about 2.5 hours of walking – but it will also allow you to discover the surreal landscapes of the Île de Ré that have inspired many painters.

Total immersion guaranteed, between pine forests, salt marshes and coastal dikes! From the Matray dike, you will have a 360° view of the ocean.

You will have the chance to walk along the Fiers d’Ars, an 800-hectare bay surrounded by marshes. But also the narrowest point between the south and the north of the Île de Ré.

Have these hikes whetted your appetite? The restaurant Plaisir welcomes you to help you discover other flavors of the island!
